About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm excited to be talking with Dr. Rose, an expert in Indigenous health and the lead instructor for the Certificate Programme in Indigenous Health Advocacy. Dr. Rose, can you tell us about your personal experiences that led you to teach this course? GUEST: Absolutely, I'm honored to be here. I'm a member of the Ojibwe nation and have spent my career advocating for Indigenous health. I wanted to create a program that empowered others to do the same. HOST: That's wonderful. The course description mentions essential skills like policy analysis and communication. How relevant are these skills in today's industry? GUEST: They're crucial. With the growing recognition of systemic barriers in healthcare, having the ability to analyze policies and communicate effectively is more important than ever. Our course provides students with these skills to advocate for change. HOST: Speaking of challenges, what are some obstacles you've faced or seen in the field of Indigenous health advocacy? GUEST: There are many challenges, but one that stands out is the lack of cultural understanding in healthcare systems. This leads to health disparities and mistrust between Indigenous communities and healthcare providers. Our course addresses this by emphasizing culturally safe practices. HOST: That's an important issue to address. Lastly, where do you see the future of Indigenous health advocacy going? GUEST: I believe we're moving towards a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system. Indigenous health advocates play a key role in this transformation, and our course prepares students to be part of this positive change. HOST: Dr. Rose, thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your insights on the Certificate Programme in Indigenous Health Advocacy. It's clear that this course will empower many to become strong advocates for Indigenous health. GUEST: Thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure.
