About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm excited to be speaking with Dr. Sofia Patel, an expert in health equity and the lead instructor for our new Certificate Programme in Health Equity Approaches. Dr. Patel, thank you for joining us. GUEST: Thank you for having me. I'm looking forward to our conversation. HOST: To start, could you share a bit about your personal experiences and insights related to health equity? GUEST: Of course. I've seen firsthand how social determinants of health, such as income, education, and housing, can significantly impact a person's wellbeing. Health equity is about addressing these disparities and ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to live a healthy life. HOST: That's a powerful perspective. Now, what current industry trends do you think are most relevant to this course? GUEST: There's growing recognition of the importance of cultural competency in healthcare. This course covers that topic, helping learners understand and respect diverse backgrounds and experiences to provide more effective care. HOST: Speaking of challenges, what obstacles have you faced in teaching or learning about health equity? GUEST: One challenge is the vast amount of information available on this topic. It can be overwhelming, so we curated the most relevant and evidence-based content for this course. HOST: That's a great approach. Looking to the future, what do you envision for the field of health equity? GUEST: I believe we'll see more emphasis on prevention and upstream interventions, as well as increased collaboration between healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community organizations. HOST: Dr. Patel, thank you for sharing your insights and for your work in health equity. We're excited to offer this certificate programme and contribute to a healthier, more equitable world. GUEST: Thank you for having me. I'm confident that this programme will empower learners to make a real difference in their communities and beyond.
