About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast! Today, I'm excited to have Dr. Jane Smith with us, who's an expert in health ethics and the instructor of a new course called "Professional Certificate in Intersectionality and Health Ethics." Dr. Smith, can you tell us a bit about what inspired you to create this program? GUEST: Absolutely! I've seen firsthand how social identities like race, gender, class, and sexual orientation can significantly impact health outcomes. I wanted to create a course that would help healthcare professionals and bioethicists address these disparities and provide more equitable care. HOST: That's wonderful. In your experience, what are some current trends in healthcare when it comes to intersectionality and health ethics? GUEST: There's a growing recognition of the importance of cultural competence and inclusivity in healthcare. Providers are increasingly seeking out training to better understand and address the unique needs and experiences of diverse patient populations. HOST: Speaking of challenges, what do you find to be some of the biggest obstacles in implementing intersectional approaches in healthcare? GUEST: One challenge is the lack of representation and diverse perspectives in healthcare leadership and research. This can lead to policies and practices that inadvertently perpetuate health disparities. Additionally, there can be resistance to change and a lack of awareness about the importance of intersectionality in healthcare. HOST: That's insightful. As we look to the future, what do you envision for the role of intersectionality in healthcare and health ethics? GUEST: I believe intersectionality will become an integral part of healthcare education, research, and practice. By embracing an intersectional lens, we can create a more equitable and just healthcare system that truly serves the needs of all patients. HOST: Dr. Smith, thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your insights on this important topic. To our listeners, be sure to check out the "Professional Certificate in Intersectionality and Health Ethics" to learn more about how you can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system.
